Kids Frequently Asked Questions
Is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu safe for children?
Yes. Safety is our top priority. All classes are age-appropriate, structured and supervised by qualified coaches. Techniques are taught in a controlled and progressive way, with a strong focus on awareness, respect and care for training partners.
What age can my child start?
We welcome children from 3 years old. Classes are grouped by age and ability to ensure the best learning experience at every stage.
Does my child need any experience?
No experience is needed at all. Most children join as complete beginners. Our programme is designed to build confidence gradually and support every child from their first class.
What should my child wear to their first class?
Comfortable sports clothing is fine for a trial session. If your child joins, they will train in a Gracie Barra Gi, which can be provided as part of certain memberships or purchased through the academy.
How often should my child train?
This depends on their age and programme. Younger children usually train once per week, while children aged 5–15 typically attend two sessions per week. Our coaches can advise on the best option for your child.
Can parents watch the classes?
Yes. Parents are welcome to watch from our designated viewing area. We also have large screens with live camera feeds so you can follow your child’s session comfortably.
What if my child is shy or nervous?
This is very common. Our coaches are experienced in helping children settle in, feel comfortable and make friends. Many shy children quickly gain confidence through training.
Will my child learn self-defence?
Yes. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu teaches practical self-defence skills alongside balance, coordination, problem-solving and emotional control. These skills help both on and off the mats.
Do you teach discipline and respect?
Absolutely. Respect, listening and self-control are core parts of our programme. Children are taught to work as a team, follow instructions and treat others with kindness.
How do belt promotions work?
Belt and stripe promotions are included in all kids memberships. Progress is based on effort, behaviour, consistency and skill development. We do not charge for belt promotions.
Does my child have to compete?
No. Competition is always optional. We offer opportunities for children who want to compete, but many train purely for confidence, fitness and enjoyment.
What if my child misses a class?
We understand that life can be busy. In many cases, children can attend an alternative session within their age group, subject to availability.
Do you offer sibling discounts?
Yes. We offer reduced rates for families with more than one child training at the academy.
How do I book a free trial?
You can book a free trial using our online booking form. This allows your child to experience a full class with no obligation.
What makes Gracie Barra different from other martial arts schools?
Gracie Barra follows a structured global curriculum focused on safety, consistency and long-term development. Our academy combines professional coaching with a strong sense of community.
